SMOKE AND MIRRORS
In my room with the shades pulled talkin’ treason
The right space in time for all the wrong reasons
Thought it’d do me some good to get back and get even
But I remember what they said
just cause you don’t feel the club Don’t think it’s you they’re not beatin’
A child opens his eyes and the whole world is golden
But maze is full up and it’s boys like you that it’s holdin’
Ya take your father’s place drinkin’ here’s mud in your eye
And if this last forever we’ll all have convictions But we won’t know why
What’s the difference between us we both speak the king’s English
And wish on the same stars in the sky
And regret all the mornings we were too drunk to crawl home
Then wish we were too drunk to cry
In a better place this would all be smoke and mirrors
But I’m afraid it’s all true this old soldier grows weary
They stoke fires for kettles and the street smells like heaven
And just blocks away signals are readied
They’re not checking credentials when the final tolls levied
I’m sure they cry on both sides
And the last drink is just so my hands can stay steady
What’s the difference between us we both speak the king’s English
And wish on the same stars in the sky
And regret all the mornings we were too drunk to crawl home
Then wish we were too drunk to cry
In a better place this would all be smoke and mirrors
But I’m afraid it’s all true this old soldier grows weary
Like a child who hides his head under the cover
You tip your glass back and you ask for another
And you drink yourself blind ‘cause what you see just undoes ya
and the tallies are posted for all
good intentions and corpses tower above you
What’s the difference between us we both speak the king’s English
And wish on the same stars in the sky
And regret all the mornings we were too drunk to crawl home
Then wish we were too drunk to cry
In a better place this would all be smoke and mirrors
But I’m afraid it’s all true this old soldier grows weary
